The Inspectorate of Labour and Mines conducted 17,3000 checks at Luxembourg businesses last year, issuing 3,300 fines to the tune of €14.3 million.

The ITM’s 2023 report showed a substantial increase in checks, compared to just 7,000 in 2022.

These figures were supplied by the Ministries of Agriculture and Labour in response to a parliamentary question submitted by ADR MPs Alexandra Schoos and Jeff Engelen concerning the number of violations in the wine-growing industry.

Ministers Hansen and Mischo said that 36 checks had been carried out in 2023, with violations found at 10 of Luxembourg’s 250 wineries. The affected winegrowers were made to pay out fines of around €44,500.

The ministers added that certain cases had arisen in which sanctions were imposed on winegrowers who were not familiar with the appropriate legislation. Due to this, the government plans to simplify the procedures for recruiting temporary staff in the wine, fruit and vegetable growing sectors.
