Municipal elections1 in 4 people failed to vote or spoiled ballots

RTL Today
329,246 people registered to vote in this year's municipal elections, but nearly a sixth of voters chose not to cast their ballot.

In Luxembourg, voting is mandatory for all residents with Luxembourgish nationality between the ages of 18 and 75. This year, residents with foreign nationalities were permitted to participate, as long as they were of age, registered in Luxembourg, and possessed the right to vote.

Of the nearly 330,000 registered voters, some 50,000 people declined to vote at all - either in person or via postal ballot.

However, this number does include residents aged over 75 who would have received a voting card in the post, but are not required to vote by law.

Official data does not disclose how many of the 50,000 were aged under 75 and therefore simply opted not to participate in the elections.

Nearly 278,000 ballots were cast in Sunday’s vote - 25,000 of which were not included in the overall vote count. Over 11,000 of these were blank, while 14,456 were discarded for being invalid, meaning they were either spoiled or contained too many votes.

In total there were no votes counted for 76,388 registered voters, representing around 23% of the 333,000-strong electorate.
