Ten skiers were caught in avalanches on Boxing Day, two of whom, including the ski guide, lost their lives.

Fifteen rescue workers and two rescue helicopters were deployed to the scene in La Plagne at an altitude of around 2,600 meters. Although weather reports did not forecast a particularly high avalanche risk, a rescue worker warned via the AFP news agency that:

‘We are currently facing very particular conditions. Over the past ten days, strong winds have continuously shifted snow, despite relatively low snowfall this season. These wind-driven deposits can create dangerous situations, particularly on mountain ridges, where even experienced skiers may encounter isolated but hazardous spots.’

The rescue worker further emphasised that skiing or hiking is only safe on designated slopes and trails, which reduces the risk of being caught in an avalanche.
