Books, pens, publishing, and a passion for language – Ernster has quietly shaped Luxembourg’s cultural life for over a century.
This week, we will get to know Ernster, a Luxembourg family business since 1889. Now in its fifth generation, the company is headed by Paul Ernster and boasts a team of 120 employees across ten stores throughout Luxembourg, with its 11th location, spanning a surface of 26 square meters opening this July in Dudelange.
One of Ernster’s standout gems is its all-English bookstore, nestled near the Grand Ducal Palace. The store has recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, and is the only store in Luxembourg exclusively dedicated to English books. With its handpicked selection of children’s books, classic novels, original works, and translations of beloved novels – every thing complete with a British flair that fits perfectly in its prime city-centre location!
Ernster is far more than just a bookstore chain. Its stationery offering is just as robust, with an entire store in Luxembourg City dedicated to the category. Opened in 1982 and recently renovated in 2024, this shop features everything from school supplies and postcards to luxury brands and personalised items.
The brand is constantly evolving with services including a B2B arm that supplies schools and companies with bulk orders of furniture, office supplies, and more.
But it’s not all! Did you know that Ernster also runs its own publishing house? It publishes children’s, educational and Luxembourgish-language books.
Ernster not only sells across Luxembourg but also has a long-running website, which was launched in 1996! From simple beginnings, the website has evolved to feature over 11 million offers in four different languages. The website also features book recommendations, event updates, and a popular click-and-collect service that allows customers to order online and pick up their purchases in-store. Home delivery is also available.
