The coronavirus-induced lockdown made it abundantly clear how important digitisation will be in the future. The European Commission therefore hopes to incentivise governments and municipalities to improve access to the internet.

It is in this light that the commission launched the WiFi4EU initiative, which provides municipalities with the opportunity to apply for vouchers for up to €15,000. The vouchers are to be used to install wifi equipment in public spaces within the municipality that are not already equipped with a free wifi hotspot.
