The majority of MEPs are expected to vote in favour of introducing the USB-C format plug as a standard. Negotiators from the EU Parliament and the member states had already agreed on this in June.
USB-C plugs could then be introduced for all mobile phones, tablets and digital cameras from autumn 2024. For laptops, USB-C would probably not become the standard until 2026.
According to the EU Commission, mobile phone charging cables were responsible for around 11,000 tonnes of e-waste in 2018.
