In 2022, the percentage of people in Luxembourg who worked overtime was 6.6%, slightly below the EU average.
But in some of our neighbouring countries that number is well above the average. In Belgium 9.3% of people worked overtime and in France 10.2%, making it one of the highest rates in the EU.
In comparison Germany and the Netherlands had slightly lower rates than Luxembourg, with 6% and 5.8% respectively.
Greece had the highest share of workers logging overtime across the EU at 12.6%, while the lowest rates were recorded in the eastern states of Bulgaria and Latvia, each only having below 1% of workers registering long hours.
Interesting to note is that almost a third of all self-employed people in the EU work 49 hours or more per week. This is especially striking compared to the rate of employees that work overtime, only 4%.
When looking at specific employment categories, agricultural, forestry and fishery workers, as well as managers work the most overtime, with 28% and 24%, respectively, logging long hours. This is significantly higher than any other major occupational group, as they all record less than 8% of workers doing overtime.
