Following major disruptions on two railway lines on Saturday, the Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL) has now provided explanations regarding the cause.

According to CFL, the technical issues on the lines connecting Luxembourg City with Thionville/Metz and Luxembourg City with Esch/Alzette/Rodange appear to have been caused by higher-than-usual strain on the electric infrastructure.

Due to works on an electrical substation in Berchem, power was fed into the network from Belval – a departure from normal procedures. CFL believes that this may have contributed to a main power line coming loose near Bettembourg.

The first incident occurred at around 8am on Saturday. After that issue was resolved, a power line came loose approximately 50 metres away. Railway traffic on both lines resumed at 10pm on Saturday evening.
