Cat Krettles, head of communications at the Cinémathèque, came on Melissa Dalton’s show The Home Stretch to talk about the return of Open Air Cinema this Friday 21 July.
The Open Air Cinema is a week-long event hosted by the Cinémathèque that puts on one film every night, starting when the sun sets at 9.30pm. The final date is 28 July.
This year the event is hosted at Place Guilluame II (Knuedler). Last year, there were only 550 seats available, but this has been scaled up to 740 seats. Each screening is free and ticketless, but that means seats are first come first served, so make sure you arrive early.
It’s also a good idea to bring a blanket and even a cushion to make your experience more comfortable. And while their are no guarantees when it comes to weather, the screenings will be shown rain or shine, so be sure to bring a rain coat!
The Open Air Cinema’s programming tries to choose films that you have most likely heard of from famous directors, but may not have seen. A few of the films included this year are Singing in the Rain (Donen, Kelley, 1952, US) and To Catch a Thief (Hitchcock, 1955, US).

The Cinémathèque is dedicated to preserving international films and sharing them with a broader audience. They have year-long indoor programming as well.
Starting 1 August and going through the end of September, the Cinémathèque is programming travel/journey movies from all around the world. The standard ticket only costs €3.70, while the student tickets cost €2.40. You can become a member and buy 10 tickets at a time for only €25.00.
