The annual CinEast festival shines a spotlight on Central and Eastern European cinema, with Croatia being the country of focus this year. To mark the end of the annual grape harvest, head to Schengen for the Hunnefeier, an unusual festival which honours an ancient custom where on the last day of the harvest a living cockerel was tied to the end of the last row of vines to be harvested. The winegrower who harvested the fastest won the bird as a prize. Today the celebration has been replaced with a craft market with over 100 stalls, an exhibition of historic tractors and live music as well as the chance for a first taste of this year’s vintage.
