Welcome to the weekend! See waiters battle the hill race, taste Picadilly wine, go Alpaca trekking, watch open air films or close your weekend with Tom Cruise and the Closing Ceremony.

1. Cheer on waiters at hill race

What: Serious prizes for the win
Where: De Gudde Wëllen, 17 Rue du St Esprit
When: Sunday, 11 August at 4pm – FREE – info & programme

For the best fun you can have legally, head to De Gudde Wëllen to watch waiters from different bars and restaurants as well as bar aficionados race through the streets, while carefully balancing trays filled with drinks. There will be obstacles and a catwalk at the end and the jury will pick winners – not only for speed, but also for the person who did the best walk, had the best costume and spilled the fewest drinks. You can also choose to participate if you fancy your chances against the professionals....

2. Attend music festival at Echternach lake

A free music festival takes places at Echternach this weekend, bringing the DJ giant Markus Schulz as well as local indie heroes TUYS or hip-hoppers DE LÄB, among many others. There is no camping this year, but a free shuttle service from various communes around the country will get you to the festival.

3. Go Alpaca trekking

What: From Peru to Luxembourg
Where: Schmitzgaessel, Hoverange
When: Thursday, 8 August at 6pm – info & tickets

Not an event this editor would’ve expected in the ‘bourg: Meet Luxembourg’s Alpacas and let them lead you on a relaxed hike along a picturesque 4km route through the countryside. Tickets are €30 per person and the group sets off from Hoverange, near Beckerich, at 6pm.

4. Watch open air films in Grevenmacher

What: Sunset Cinema
Where: 3 Route de Vin, Grevenmacher
When: Friday, 9 August and Saturday, 10 August – FREE – more info here

The open air cinema currently touring the country is screening Bohemian Rhapsody and Frozen 2 in Grevenmacher this weekend. Movies start at 9.15pm and are free!

5. Don’t be silly, go to Picadilly

What: Wine. Lots of wine
Where: Stadtbredimus
When: Friday, 9 August to Sunday, 11 August – FREE – more info here

That’s the famous quote locals use every year to get their family and friends along to the Picadilly wine fest in Stadtbredimus. Expect plenty of Picadilly wine, which tastes sweet and slightly sparkling, reminding you of Kir Royale cocktails, perfect for the summer heat.

6. See Olympics Closing Ceremony

What: Apparently featuring Tom Cruise
Where: Streaming
When: Sunday, 11 August at 9pm – see link below

A few hours after the conclusion of the women’s marathon, the final event of the Olympic Games, the Closing Ceremony, will bring to a close more than two weeks of sporting feats and festivities. Wrapping up the Olympics in style, an all-new show “Records” will be staged in the Stade de France in the evening. Stream it live on https://www.olympiades.lu/livestream-eoes24/.

7. Relax with yoga in the park

What: Get oxygen into the body and mind
Where: Kinnekswiss park

Yoga instructors Sarah & John host free weekly yoga sessions in the Kinnekswiss park between 10.30– 1.45am. Bring your own yoga mat and water and text them +352 661 71 66 88 for more information. The session is donation-based.
