This week on Mom Life in Luxembourg, Dr Henderika de Vries explains why creativity is key to success and offers tips on nurturing it in kids.
Mom Life in Luxembourg is the leading parenting podcast in Luxembourg, dedicated to serving the English speaking community. You can subscribe anywhere you get your podcasts or you can tune in to Today Radio every Friday at 11am to hear it on air. In this weeks' episode, we are talking all about creativity in kids, and why it matters.
What if the secret to your child's future success isn't just good grades or traditional intelligence but something far more powerful and nuanced-creativity?
In today's fast-paced world, creativity is no longer just reserved for painters and poets. It's a crucial skill for problem-solving, innovation, and adapting to change. But here's the thing: despite its importance, creativity is often overlooked in education and in daily life.
In this episode I sit down with Dr Henderika de Vries, former Fulbright Yale Scholar, PhD in creativity from the Sorbonne Paris Cité, to discuss how culture affects creativity, and how we can nurture creativity in our children (and ourselves), as well as the key factors a person needs to live a creative life.
The world is changing fast. The jobs our children will have in the future don't even exist yet. More than ever, creativity is a valuable skill that will help them navigate a rapidly evolving world. Whether they become scientists, entrepreneurs, or artists, the ability to think differently will set them apart.
By fostering creativity now, we're not just helping our kids become better problem-solvers-we're giving them the tools to shape the future. Not to mention, according to a recent study cited on CNN, creativity is the antidote to anxiety. It is apparently actually impossible to be anxious when you're being creative!
Whether you're a parent hoping to help your child think outside the box or simply curious about how creative thinking shapes the world, this episode is filled with fascinating insights you won't want to miss. For full details, you'll have to listen to the podcast, but for here are some quick nuggets of wisdom on how to raise creative kids:
Let your kids get bored: In today's highly over scheduled world, this one is harder than it looks!
Be open to ambiguity and be non-judgemental: Let your child dwell in the gray area.
Be open to weird ideas: Generally, the farther out the idea is from the expected, the more creative it is!
Expose kids to different cultures and perspectives: I think that just by living in Luxembourg we can all pat ourselves on the back for this one and cross it off our list!
Please give it a listen, I'd love to know what you think.
