Before we leave the cafe and go our separate ways this evening, I'd like to thank you for such a detailed and vivid recounting of your summer holiday.
I never knew there were so many nuances to staying in an all-inclusive mid-market resort on an European island popular with tourists in the summer and which has been the subject of countless movies and TV shows. No, I'm not being sarcastic. It was like a mystery to me.
I’ll admit that when we first sat down and I asked about your summer, I was expecting a few words or, at most, a one-minute summary of where you went, for how long, and maybe a remark about the quality of the food and the weather.
Never did I expect that you'd spend the next two hours giving me every single detail. From the moment you told me about how your flight got canceled so you had to take another one the next day in Charleroi, I was hooked. That's crazy. I don't think that's ever happened before.
And it only got better. You described the whole boarding process. Who would have thought that families with children could board first? The in-flight lunch, wow, chicken or pasta. You told me that you drank an iced tea, but you forgot to tell me if you liked it. So, did you? And that landing, so extraordinarily unexceptional.
Oh, and then you described to me your hotel room. The size, number of beds, and even how the door to the balcony opened. True! I also assumed most balcony doors were sliding doors. Most curious.
Afterwards, you told me all about the daily activities and events at the hotel. Tennis and fitness? I can't believe it. And performers every night? Incredible. I'm sure I'd be dying to know about every performer if you hadn't told me already. So thank you. I agree. It's important to distinguish between the various types of flamenco dancing. I'm so grateful you were able to explain it to me.
And thank you so much for explaining to me how the dining system worked. So, if I got it right, people lined up at every meal for a buffet? And there were sections for salads, meats, desserts, and so on? Unbelievable.
Now that I think about it, there are so many things that I still don't know. Was the shower soap different from the hand soap? Was the ice in your cocktail crushed or cubed? Did you have a key card or an old-fashioned door key? If so, was it heavy? Pretty? Did you worry you might lose it?
No, really, I'm not being sarcastic. If I had the chance to hear your story again, I’d jump at it. Tomorrow evening? No, I'm afraid I've already got plans. I’m going to have a drink with Clara. You know her, right?
Yes, she wants to tell me all about the renovations she and her husband did on their home this summer. Am I looking forward to it? Of course. I love stories about picking out wallpaper and choosing sink fixtures. No, I’m not being sarcastic.
