We have come a long way from the now classic video of Will Smith eating spaghetti – while it has only been three years and change since that video was first published, we have seen advancements that many thought would take considerably longer. Today, with models such as Google’s Veo 3 and OpenAI’s Sora 2, it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell computer fictions from reality.
It is also increasingly important: As image and video models continue to improve, creating in seconds visuals (even videos with sound) that are in many cases indistinguishable from reality, we stand at the precipice of a media landscape in which reality can easily be distorted for political and financial gain.
A recent study found that 20% of videos showed to new YouTube users are AI generated, with AI-based channels generating millions in revenue.
Being able to spot AI-generated images and video is no longer as easy as counting fingers – but it’s more important than ever, and will only become more so.
That’s the context in which we put together this quiz. The cost of generating the AI videos in this quiz was minimal (less than €10), and took only moments. We deliberately did not allow more than three generations per video, and further refinement would have removed many of the AI clues in the output.
So, can you tell the real from the artificial? Take our quiz to find out.
