On Thursday, BBC Radio 2 premiered a new song by Queen called Face It Alone, recorded with Freddie Mercury in 1988.

Face It Alone was recorded by the band during the sessions for their 1989 album The Miracle. These were particularly memorable times for the band, as they were marked by Mercury receiving his HIV diagnosis.

It premiered on Thursday by BBC Radio 2’s Ken Bruce and is one of the six unreleased tracks to be featured in the upcoming box set of The Miracle which is to be released on 18 November. The box will also include demos, interviews and alternate takes. Four of the songs feature Freddie Mercury’s vocals.

According to the guitarist, Brian May, the recording was thought to be unsalvageable for many years but the engineering team managed to stitch it together. The song is marked by particular darkness and depth.

Freddie Mercury died in November 1991, just a few months after Queen released their last album, Innuendo, which came right after The Miracle. The group recorded another album called Made In Heaven featuring Mercury’s vocals in order to complete the songs he had recorded before his death.
