You might expect to find the penguins in the shop because they were looking to steal some fish, however this was not the case — they were looking for warmth and were found huddling near the grills. An employee found the animals after they had made ''a cooing, humming sound’’ and the police released them back into the Harbour after a short detention.
However, the penguins were not afraid to break the law again and went back to the shop for a second time. After being removed the Department of Conservation is now monitoring the area because it is likely that the birds will return again. Around this time of year, penguins start to nest and the warm spot by the grill seems to be to their liking.

Wellington Harbour is home to about 600 pair of penguins, whose conservation status is considered to be at risk to declining and it was not the first time that the bird have been spotted outside the harbour. However, people are advised to keep their distance, as the animals can bite.
