The Oscar-winning actress said Netflix “seems willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism” and that considering the popularity of the show, there is a big danger that the audience takes it as historically accurate truth rather than a TV drama series.
In a letter to The Times, she wrote, “The closer the drama comes to our present times, the more freely it seems willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism.” She continues, “While many will recognise The Crown for the brilliant but fictionalised account of events that it is, I fear that a significant number of viewers, particularly overseas, may take its version of history as being wholly true.”
She insinuated that the suggestions made in the series were “cruelly unjust to the individuals and damaging to the institution they represent”, especially after the recent death of the Queen Elizabeth II.
The actress is in close relations with both King Charles and the Queen Consort.
