Following the expiration of the copyright for Mickey Mouse, two filmmakers revealed their plans for Mickey Mouse horror movies.
Mickey's Mouse Trap is the name of one of the upcoming movies. Fans of the Scream franchise will be delighted as the storyline revolves around a group of friends pursued by a murderer dressed as Mickey Mouse within an amusement park.
Indeed, the copyright for the short black-and-white animated films "Steamboat Willie" and "Plane Crazy" from 1928 expired as of January 1st. This means that adaptations and similar works based on the original characters like Mickey and Minnie Mouse are now allowed without infringing on copyright. These characters have entered the public domain, and their use is no longer restricted by copyright laws.
But it's not necessarily that simple. Disney explains that it will continue to assert its "rights over modern versions of Mickey Mouse."
"We just wanted to have some fun", says Jamie Baily, filmmaker for Mickey's Mouse Trap, in a trailer that he published on YouTube. The horror-comedy doesn't have a big budget, and is expected to be released in March.
Steven LaMorte, another filmmaker also working on a Mickey Mouse movie explains: "Steamboat Willie brought a lot of joy to many generations and has the potential for a crazy horror movie." The film is set to start production this spring.
