What's On? Christmas edition7 things to do at home this weekend

Josh Oudendijk
Welcome to the weekend! Merry Christmas to all of you, and wishing everyone lots of love and health. 2020 hasn't been much of an 'events' year, but that shouldn't stop us from doing some fun things at home this time.

1. Celebrate Christmas with RTL Today’s videos and giveaways

What: Gifts you make your editors jealous with as they can’t participate
Where: Here, on the world’s best news site, of course
When: Friday, 25 December

Have you ever been wanting to get to know the team behind the competitive weather posts, colourful opinion pieces or coronavirus live ticker? Who translates the pressers? Who is on the morning shift? Now is the moment. The truth will be laid bare.

On 25 December RTL Today will be celebrating a virtual Christmas with all our dear readers! Amongst the highlights are some serious freebies, hopefully some poetry, reader mail and videos. There are quizes and prizes every hour. No need to spend a Christmas alone this year. Tune in to the site and our Facebook Page for some entertaining coverage!

2. Build and decorate your own gingerbread house

What: Massive construction
Where: Probably kitchen is a smart spot
When:
Anytime, but it will take a while...

This is a serious, full-day project for the family. Building your own gingerbread house (or castle or shed, for that matter) is incredibly rewarding, but the main problem is that it ends up being so beautiful you don’t even want to take it apart and eat it for tea. Follow the wonderful tutorial below and let us know how you’re getting on! We’d share your picture on our social media channels, pinky promise.

3. Get some fresh air with outdoor games

What: Getting and staying active
Where: Garden, forest, field
When: During the day - watch the curfew...

Fresh air and physical activity have become an important factor in staying healthy this year. Why not spend some time outside with cool, out-of-the-box games? Make an attempt at Ultimate Frisbee, for example, where two teams try to get a frisbee across the opposing team’s line. Set up a Christmas scavenger hunt outdoors with a fun prize, or set up a funky natural obstacle course that dad of course ends up losing. Get that creative spirit going!

4. Organise Christmas karaoke

What: Live music at home
Where: On the stage in the living room
When: Early morning to wake up grandpa

Get those vocal chords tuned for Christmas sing-alongs! From the traditional carols such as Jingle Bells and Silent Night to modern hits like “All I Want for Christmas Is You” or “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” (yes, that one exists, check it out) this is the perfect activity for Christmas Eve. Only sing, however, if you’re socially distancing and together with the same household.

5. Set up a DIY hot chocolate bar

What: Calorie bomb, but that’s okay
Where: Café casa
When: When the time feels right

The kids will definitely love this one. What’s cooler than a steaming hot chocolate drink bar where kids can serve themselves and decide on their own set of toppings? Marshmallows, sweets, cookies...and LOTS of cream! Hammer a few furniture pieces together to make your own counter with lights, music and delicious smells. Then move on to point 3 above for the next day to burn the calories.

6. Watch Schungfabrik Christmas Session

What: Great Luxembourg artists
Where: On the coach or at the table
When: Background music during dinner, or as a family TV event

Musical legends Claire Parsons, Pol Belardi, Jerome Klein and Niels Engel present you their own vision of Christmas classics and alternative (soon to be?) classics. We all need some live music this year, so this is a real joy to listen to. Moreover, it’s exceptionally well produced and performed. Viva la musica!

7. Stay hopeful, dream and make plans for 2021

What: Dreams become reality!
Where: A quiet place or energetic group discussion
When: Before New Year’s Eve

This year has undoubtedly been a tough one for many. But that shouldn’t stop us from making plans and dreaming about the things we want to do in 2021. Why not grab a notepad and scribble down all the adventures you’d like to undertake next year, the places you want to visit, and the people you would like to meet? This is a great time for reflection and looking into the future.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
