Lua, created by Luxembourg start-up Mu-Design, communicates with you via an LCD screen to tell you when to water your plant or if it needs more sunlight.

Lua is able to detect moisture, exposure, temperature and movement.

When a plant is well looked after, the LCD screen shows a smiley face to let the user know the conditions are perfect.

If a plant does not receive enough sunlight, Lua will pull a vampire face with sharp teeth to show that there is insufficient exposure to light.

Lua is also able to sync with a smartphone, so that you can check the status of your plants on the go.

The company that is behind Lua, Mu-Design, is based in Esch-sur-Alzette.

The founder, Vivien Muller, used an online fundraising campaign to raise funds for the device. Muller raised over 350,000 euros from 2,800 backers.

Lua is available to pre-order via Mu-Design's website.

Muller's other ideas include: the Bearbot, a bear-shaped universal remote that licks its lips, sneezes and yawns; WatchMe (Watchus cyclopus), a bedside companion that charges wearables such as smart watches; and Electree, a bonsai-tree shaped sculpture and mobile charger.
