With the winter months upon, it's time for an important question: which tyres to choose for the cold weather?

Winter tyres or all-season tyres? It's a question that arises each year. Our colleagues at 5Minutes went straight to the expects to clarify this once and for all.

Aurélien Woelfflin, chief mechanic, and his wife Caroline Bassan-Woelffin, manager at Luxadventures, agreed to answer a few questions in the subject.

The answer was rather clear. Winter tyres are the higher performance option and have better grip in cold weather, meaning they are better suited for wintry conditions. All-season tyres inevitably have to compromise on these features, as they have to be suited for year-round weather conditions. Compromise equals concession, explains Aurélien.

Whilst all-season tyres can be efficient and of good quality, they do not perform well enough once temperatures drop below the 7°C mark. The same goes for hot weather. Therefore, all-season tyres are only recommended in regions where temperatures stay between 5°C and 30 °C.
