'The Last Ashes' ('LÄIF A SÉIL') is a brand-new Luxembourgish film with subtitles in English that hit cinemas just last week. Melissa was joined in the Today Radio studios by director/co-writer Loic Tanson and actor Timo Wagner to tell us how the film – a female-led modern western set in Luxembourg in 1854 – came to be.
Did we also mention it was a tale of revenge, starring most of the cast of 'Capitani'?
Melissa Dalton sat down with Loic and Timo to discuss when the idea to set a film in 19th-century Luxembourg was first conceived, the story's relationship to both Greek tragedy and Italian-American ('spaghetti') Westerns, and what the response to this blend of genres has been.
Listen in to the interview as Loic tells us why a female lead character was so crucial to his vision (amid a fundamentally macho genre), the directors that inspired him to make films - and Timo explains what it was like to work on a film so deeply rooted in Luxembourgish history, as well as the challenge of portraying a physically and mentally pained character.
