L as in Luxembourgish

Luxembourgish is the language of the Luxembourgers. A living language spoken by around 400,000 people worldwide, it is an integral part of our identity. Rooted in a rich oral tradition, Luxembourgish is increasingly establishing itself as a written language, particularly in digital communication.

Alongside Luxembourgish, the official languages are French and German. Multilingualism is indeed a distinctive asset of Luxembourg and reflects its openness to the world.

You will find the letter L at the Centre National de Littérature in Mersch.

Diversity has become a driving force of Luxembourg. It is one of the most visible realities of our country. Of around 680,000 inhabitants, nearly half the population is made up of foreign nationalities. In total, around 180 nationalities.

As for the 230,000 cross-border workers arriving each day from France, Belgium and Germany, they double the active population, contribute to the country’s dynamism and enrich its cultural and linguistic diversity. This diversity is lived in companies, schools and streets and is expressed in a multitude of languages!
