Luxembourg’s women’s national team suffered a 1-3 defeat to Israel on Saturday evening at the BSC Stadium in Budaörs, Hungary, despite taking an early lead.
Unlike in the sides’ first meeting, the Red Lionesses made a bright start and were ahead within seven minutes. Hannah Dietrich played the ball back from the penalty area to Kimberley Dos Santos, who fired it into the net. The lead lasted barely two minutes, however, before Vital Kats slipped past Lucie Schlimé to make it 1-1. Luxembourg held their own for a spell, but two goals just before the break, a long-range strike from Kats and a second stemming from a Luxembourg turnover, sent the team into the dressing room 1-3 down.
Captain Laura Miller did not return for the second half. Luxembourg steadied defensively but struggled to create meaningful chances going forward. In a relatively even contest, they were unable to find a way back into the game, and the score remained unchanged.
Luxembourg sit bottom of their group without a point. Their final two matches, against Belgium, take place on 5 and 9 June.
