After missing out on the BGL Ligue title against Mamer on the final day of the season, Differdange were determined to make amends by at least lifting the Luxembourg Cup.
The underdogs from the east, however, had no intention of making life easy for the favourites from the Minett region and were highly motivated to cause an upset.
In the end, Rosport were unable to pull off that feat. Differdange ran out deserved 4:1 winners at the Stade de Luxembourg, securing the Luxembourg Cup for the seventh time in the club's history.
1:0 Abreu (7'),
2:0 Buch (43'),
3:0 Abreu (54'),
3:1 Kyereh (64'),
4:1 Hadji (70', penalty)
Differdange took control from the start at the Stade de Luxembourg and attacked the Rosport goal at full speed. In the opening minutes, they created several chances. Franzoni tried his luck from distance in the fourth minute, but Rosport goalkeeper Bürger was able to deal with the effort.
A few moments later, however, Bürger was beaten. In the seventh minute, Abreu received the ball on the left, got the better of his marker, and curled a fine effort towards goal. Bürger stretched as far as he could, but could not prevent the ball from finding the net.
Rosport then dropped deep and allowed Differdange to dominate possession, with the Minett side managing the match without any major problems. Differdange continued to test Bürger, although efforts from Dos Reis in the 18th minute and Pinto in the 28th both lacked the necessary precision and went wide.
Bürger was also called upon to deny further chances, including in the 41st minute, when he held on to a shot from Pinto. In the 38th minute, many Differdange supporters already thought the ball was heading into the Rosport net for a second time, but Buch narrowly missed a cross from Rauch.
The German striker made amends in the 43rd minute, when he turned in a cross from Rauch on the left, with a little help from fortune, to make it 2:0. That was also the score at half-time.
Rosport failed to register a single shot on target in the first half and did not even create a dangerous attacking move. Differdange's lead was therefore fully deserved, while Rosport needed to improve significantly after the break if they were still to take the cup back east.
After the restart, Rosport created their first real chance of the match, but Marques' shot in the 49th minute caused no major problems for Ventura in the Differdange goal.
At the other end, Differdange were far more clinical. In the 54th minute, Abreu picked up the ball in the penalty area and, after a quick turn, finished into the net to make it 3:0 and all but decide the match. Rosport's dream of lifting the cup was already fading shortly after half-time.
Rosport did manage to reduce the deficit in the 64th minute.
Villeneuve drove a low, sharp ball into the penalty area from the left, and no Differdange defender was able to clear. Kyereh eventually found himself unmarked in front of an empty goal and made no mistake, pulling one back for Rosport.
Their joy was short-lived. In the 70th minute, Differdange restored their three-goal advantage after being awarded a penalty. Hadji, who had come on shortly before, took the penalty and scored confidently.
With the time remaining, the task had become too great for Rosport, and the outcome was effectively settled. In the closing stages, Differdange were the only side still posing a threat in attack. However, neither Brusco nor Mfoumou managed to add another goal.
The match ended 4:1, with Differdange deservedly and convincingly prevailing to be crowned Luxembourg Cup winners for the seventh time.
