The below match report provided by Rugby Club Luxembourg gives us an exciting run-down of the action in Heidelberg!
RCL travelled Saturday to Heidelberg to take on third placed Heidelberg RG.
The first 15 minutes consisted of both teams feeling each other out with Heidelberg putting pressure on RCL defensively. RCL exited their 22 with a clearing kick that did not find touch and Heidelberg RG pounced on the opportunity by launching a quick counter attack and finding the try line in the corner. The conversion was taken and the hosts were up 7-0.
Shortly after a deep kick off, Heidelberg gave away a penalty in front of the posts and Captain Scott Browne slotted the penalty to make it 7-3.
Only 3 minutes later the home team scored another try using their outside backs to again cross the white line and extend their lead 12-3.
After a few good attacking phases RCL found themselves in Heidelberg RG’s 22m zone and were awarded a penalty by the referee. Quick thinking from scrum half and captain Scott Browne saw a cross field kick to lurking loosehead prop Matthew Dennis, who touched down unopposed in the corner. The try was then converted by Browne. The gap reduced: 12-10
With 4 minutes to go before halftime, fast feet from young outside centre Liam Carroll saw him break the defensive line before placing a well judged grubber kick which sat up for Scott Browne to gather up and score. The visitors went into halftime 12-17 up.
After the break, RCL struck first through fullback Adrian Timmermans who was on the receiving end of a quick set of hands from the RCL backline to score in the 48th minute. Score now 12-24.
Heidelberg RG continued to threaten with their wide passing game only for a resilient RCL defence to shut them down and pin them back in their own half. With a reluctance to kick and RCL defending with continuous energy and aggression, the hosts did not often venture across halfway.
With one try away from securing a 4 try bonus point, the visitors waited until the 80th minute and final play of the game for Scott Browne to spot unmarked winger Baptiste Lachaise, who fielded a beautifully weighted cross field kick and crossed for his first try on debut in Bundesliga 1.
RCL coach James Kent praised the team’s effort who will now face Heusenstamm in Luxembourg in a week’s time. “I was really proud of the effort today from the boys, especially in our defence. We came out with intent and it showed. We still have a few things to work on but we are thrilled with the win and now head back to Luxembourg to prepare for a tough match against Heusenstamm."
