Luxembourg's hopes of hosting the 2028 Tour de France Grand Départ could be dashed, with Reims seemingly in pole position ahead of a possible announcement on Monday.

After Barcelona on 4 July 2026 and Edinburgh in July 2027, where will the Tour de France set off from in 2028? Luxembourg or Reims? Both cities are candidates to host the event, which has global reach. The Tour is the third-largest sporting event in the world.

At the end of December 2025, Reims and the Grand Est region officially submitted their bid to host the Grand Départ of the 2028 Tour de France.

Luxembourg has been considering the idea for years. In February 2025, following a Government Council meeting, PM Luc Frieden officially announced that he had authorised the Minister for Sport to submit Luxembourg's bid to Tour de France organiser Amaury Sport Organisation.

This was done in early October 2025, when Christian Prudhomme, cycling director at Amaury Sport Organisation, visited La Coque in Luxembourg.

Luxembourg's bid is based in particular on a double historical milestone that could be celebrated appropriately at a Grand Départ: in 2028, it will be 100 years since Nicolas Frantz's second Tour de France victory and 70 years since Charly Gaul's triumph.

According to Le Républicain Lorrain, the answer could come as early as Monday, 18 May. The newspaper reported on Sunday that Christian Prudhomme is due to hold a major press conference in Reims on Monday at around 2pm.

The press conference with the Tour de France director will also be attended by Reims mayor Arnaud Robinet and Grand Est regional president Franck Leroy. The agenda refers to a "unique event".

Le Républicain Lorrain does not entirely rule out Luxembourg's hopes, but believes the Champagne capital "appears to be in pole position to host the Grand Départ of the 2028 Tour de France". A decision could be announced very soon.
