Gorillaz are unlike any other band. Created by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett in 1998, the virtual group combines music, animation and storytelling, with its four fictional members appearing in music videos, interviews, comics and live performances.
Albarn – then the frontman of British rock band Blur – and Hewlett first met in the early 1990s through Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, who introduced the pair during an interview for Deadline magazine.
A few years later, after becoming flatmates in London, they came up with the idea for a virtual band while watching MTV, wanting to challenge what they saw as the growing focus on image over substance in pop music.
The result was Gorillaz, whose self-titled debut album became a worldwide success in 2001 thanks to hits like Clint Eastwood and cult hits like Rock the House.
Over the past 25 years, Gorillaz have continued to push musical boundaries, blending hip-hop, alternative rock, electronic music and pop while collaborating with artists from around the world.
Their catalogue includes fan favourites such as Feel Good Inc., DARE, On Melancholy Hill and Cracker Island. Now, Gorillaz are back with their ninth studio album, The Mountain, inspired by travels across India.
The accompanying world tour will stop by at Luxexpo Open-Air in 2026, where fans can expect the group's signature mix of music, visuals and unforgettable live performances.
Their show will be the second of the venue's packed summer programme, which further features acts such as Robbie Williams, Jamiroquai, and Katy Perry.
