LUXEMBOURG ACCIDENTS – Emergency services have responded to a series of road accidents across Luxembourg since yesterday evening. A car overturned in Rameldange, injuring two people. Three more were hurt when two vehicles collided between Redange and Useldange, and another three were injured between Bivels and Vianden after a car struck a rock face. In the capital, a motorcyclist hit a pedestrian.

PETROL PRICES Unleaded petrol has increased by 2.6 cents per litre today, bringing the price to €1.483 per litre. The hike follows price rises for diesel and SP98 petrol last week, meaning all major fuel types have now gone up in the space of just a few days.

BEGGING PETITION A petition calling for greater animal protection has cleared the threshold needed to be debated in parliament, after nearly 5,900 people signed within its first 18 days. The petition targets criminal networks that exploit animals, mostly dogs, as props for organised begging, rather than ordinary homeless people who keep pets.

REFUGEE HOUSING – MPs have visited refugee facilities in Mersch, Käerjeng, and Soleuvre, accompanied by Minister Max Hahn, following open letters from residents complaining of very poor living conditions. Residents spoke of filthy and dilapidated conditions, poor food, and a lack of privacy.

UKRAINE WAR ANNIVERSARY – Four years ago today, Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since then, Ukraine has defended itself with international support, at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dead and wounded on both sides. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa are among European leaders in Kyiv today for a memorial ceremony and talks with President Zelensky. Peace negotiations under American mediation are progressing slowly, with territory the key sticking point. Plans for fresh sanctions against Russia and a €90bn aid package have been blocked Hungary and Slovakia, both dependent on Russian energy.

US STATE OF THE UNION – US President Donald Trump delivers his State of the Union address to Congress in Washington tonight. The speech is expected to double as a campaign rally, with Republicans facing the prospect of losing their congressional majority in November’s mid-term elections. Trump has signalled it will be a lengthy address.

MEXICO VIOLENCE At least 74 people have been killed in Mexico following the death of a drug lord during a military operation. Heavily armed cartel members launched reprisals across multiple locations in the west of the country. The government has deployed an additional 2500 soldiers to the region.

UK MANDELSON ARRESTPeter Mandelson has been released on bail after being arrested yesterday in connection with the Jeffrey Epstein affair. The former British Ambassador to the United States and ex-cabinet minister is suspected of passing confidential documents to the convicted sex offender.

EU US TARIFFS – The European Parliament’s Trade Committee votes this morning on proposals for an EU-US trade deal, including a clause that would allow the agreement to be reviewed if Washington fails to lower tariffs, or renews pressure over Greenland. A press conference follows at noon.

FOOTBALLUEFA has suspended midfielder Gianluca Prestianni from Benfica’s Champions League play-off second leg against Real Madrid this week after he was accused of racially abusing Vinicius Junior. He is not allowed to play for Benfica on Wednesday as the Portuguese side bid to overturn a 1-0 deficit and reach the last 16.

Police said they are investigating “abhorrent” racist abuse directed online at four Premier League footballers last weekend. Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare and Sunderland midfielder Romaine Mundle were the latest players to be targeted on Sunday, with Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana and Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri suffering similar abuse on Saturday following a 1-1 draw between their clubs.

CYCLING – Two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard announced on Monday that he will begin his 2026 season next month at the Paris-Nice stage race. The 29-year-old had been due to start his campaign last week at the UAE Tour but a training crash in Spain on January 26 forced him to change plans.
