SKELETON FIND – An exceptional discovery in Vianden. 150 skeletons have been found during archaeological excavations at the site of the new youth hostel in a former monastery. The archaeology institute says it is hard to say what period they date from. The skeletons will be analysed in detail, then reburied elsewhere.
HOUSING CRISIS – The construction sector sees itself as part of the solution to the housing crisis. That was the message from Marc Giorgetti, president of the Groupement des Entrepreneurs, at the trade body's 75th anniversary last night. He warned the crisis is far from over, as demand stays high and supply is growing too slowly.
DRONE PRESSER – The recent drone incidents in Luxembourg are in the news again today. Three ministers, Luc Frieden, Yuriko Backes, and Leon Gloden, are holding a press conference this morning, where more details are expected about the drones that caused considerable chaos to air traffic at Findel on the night of Friday to Saturday.
SATELLITE FACTORY – SES has laid the foundation stone for a satellite factory in Roeser, with Prime Minister Luc Frieden at the ceremony. The satellite operator will now develop and produce satellite technology itself. The site should be finished by the end of 2027 and employ around 300 people. The first Luxembourg-made satellite is due by the end of 2028.
BERLIN DRONES – There was another drone alert at Berlin airport at around 8pm yesterday. Airspace above the airport was closed for 45 minutes, and some flights were diverted to Dresden and Leipzig. In the first half of the year, more drones were detected at Berlin than at any other German airport.
UKRAINE WAR – There were more Russian attacks on Kyiv overnight, with ballistic missiles and faster drones that are harder to intercept. At least 2 people are reported to have been killed. Similar attacks hit several regions of Ukraine yesterday, leaving a number of dead and injured.
Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has accused Russia of a dangerous escalation, in a speech to the UN Security Council. He said Russian attacks on Ukraine and its allies have taken aggression to a new level. He pointed to a drone carrying explosives at Leipzig airport, which Germany blames on Moscow.
In his address to the UN General Assembly, Ukrainian President Zelensky called Russian President Putin "Patient Zero". He said Putin spreads the idea of war and makes the world more dangerous for everyone.
UNGA – The heads of Anthropic and OpenAI have warned the UN Security Council about the dangers of artificial intelligence. They called for international cooperation, and said key decisions on AI should be made through democratic processes, not in laboratories in San Francisco.
World leaders continue addressing the UN General Assembly in New York this afternoon. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas speaks remotely, followed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and European Council President António Costa.
CHINA US – Chinese President Xi Jinping is on a three-day state visit to the US. He was received by President Trump at a military airport near Washington. There was immediately good news in the trade dispute, as the US announced it will suspend extra customs duties on Chinese imports for a further two months.
FOOTBALL – Lyon began their women's Champions League campaign with an 8-0 win over Servette last night. Marie-Antoinette Katoto scored a hat-trick and Melchie Dumornay netted twice. Holders Barcelona beat Paris FC 5-2. Elsewhere, Chelsea won 1-0 against Austria Vienna and OH Leuven and Roma drew 0-0.
Jürgen Klopp has urged Germany to harness the power of the collective ahead of his first match as coach. They face the Netherlands in Amsterdam today, after a third straight early World Cup exit. Portugal face Wales, and Norway take on Denmark. Luxembourg start on Saturday against Bulgaria, which you can watch on RTLToday.lu with English commentary.
ASIAN GAMES – China's 13-year-old swimming prodigy Yu Zidi has sealed a hat-trick of Asian Games titles, this time in the 400m individual medley, while North Korea won their first two golds thanks to their powerhouse women weightlifters. Towards the end of the fourth full day of action in Aichi-Nagoya, China were easily top of the medals table with 47 golds.
FORMULA 1 – Practice for the Baku Grand Prix is today. The race is on Saturday, because Sunday 27 September is a public holiday in Azerbaijan.
