The Optimists Cricket Club marks its 50th anniversary with a packed programme of matches, special guests and celebrations, including visits from some of the biggest names in cricket.
Richard Neale joined the Sam Steen Show on RTL Today Radio this morning to look ahead to the festivities and reflect on five decades of cricket in the Grand Duchy.
Founded in 1976 by a group of expatriates looking to recreate the camaraderie of cricket abroad, the club has grown into one of Luxembourg's most established sporting organisations.
"What started with a small group of expats wanting to play cricket around Europe has grown tremendously," Richard explained. "We've now got our own ground in Walferdange, more than 100 members and cricket in Luxembourg has seen massive growth."
While cricket may not be the first sport many associate with Luxembourg, participation has increased significantly in recent years, driven in part by the country's international population and growing local interest.
The Optimists now welcome players from a wide range of backgrounds and experience levels, including complete beginners.
"We've got members from pretty much every country going," Richard said. "And we're also seeing more Luxembourgers getting involved as well."
The club runs men's, women's and junior sections, with youth training taking place every Sunday morning at the Pierre Werner Cricket Ground in Walferdange.

The centrepiece of the anniversary celebrations will be a visit from some of the biggest names in international cricket.
Former England stars Lord Ian Botham, Matthew Hoggard and Monty Panesar will all attend the sold-out 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner at Porta Nova on Saturday evening.
For cricket fans, it's a remarkable line-up.
Botham is widely regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders the game has ever produced, while Hoggard played a key role in England's famous 2005 Ashes victory. Panesar represented England in 50 Test matches and became one of the country's most recognisable spin bowlers.
The celebrations continue on Sunday, when all three will be at the Pierre Werner Cricket Ground, with Panesar even pulling on an Optimists shirt.
"Monty Panesar will actually be playing for the Optimists," Richard revealed. "Ian Botham and Matthew Hoggard will also be there for photos, autographs and to watch the cricket."
The weekend also features a visit from the prestigious Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), one of the most famous institutions in world cricket and the custodians of the game's laws.
The MCC will play a series of matches against both the Optimists and the Luxembourg national team:
Friday June 5 – 18:00
Optimists 1st XI vs MCC (T20)
Saturday June 6 – 13:00
Luxembourg National Team vs MCC (T20)
Sunday June 7 – 13:00
Optimists vs MCC (40-over match)
All matches take place at the Pierre Werner Cricket Ground in Walferdange.
The club is encouraging people to come along, whether they know cricket inside out or have never watched a match before.
"It's a very family-friendly environment," Richard said. "Come down, enjoy some food and drink, watch a bit of cricket and hopefully enjoy the sunshine."
Entry is free throughout the weekend.
