MURDER TRIAL – A 69-year-old man is on trial in the Luxembourg City Court for murdering his wife in September 2023. He confessed five days after she was reported missing. The court heard he strangled her after she admitted to an affair and asked for a divorce.

LUXAIR FLIGHT – A Luxair flight from Luxembourg to Malaga turned back mid-flight on Wednesday due to a technical problem. The Boeing 737 landed safely back at Findel, and passengers were flown to Spain on a replacement aircraft later in the day.

CHILDREN ONLINE SAFETY – Luxembourg’s Ombudsman for Children and Youth is urging the state to impose strict bans on smartphone and social media access for minors, a call amplified by recent controversies over AI chatbots, specifically Elon Musk’s chatbot, Grok, which recently faced significant criticism after users exploited it to generate sexualised imagery and child sexual abuse material.

LUXEMBOURG SONG CONTEST Eurovision 2025 winner JJ (Johannes ‘JJ’ Pietsch) is to perform live with his victorious song “Wasted Love” at the Luxembourg Song Contest, taking place on Saturday 24 January at the Rockhal. The show features the eight finalists, each vying for victory to represent Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna later this year.

World

GREENLAND TALKS – There has been no breakthrough in crisis talks over Greenland. The US is refusing to drop demands for control of the Arctic island, despite Danish opposition. Shortly before the meeting at the White House, Denmark announced it would strengthen its military presence in Greenland. Germany, Sweden and Norway are now also deploying military personnel to the region.

IRAN PROTESTS – The US and UK are withdrawing personnel from the Al-Udeid air base in Qatar as a precautionary measure amid rising tensions with Iran. The move comes as President Trump considers action over Tehran’s deadly crackdown on anti-government protests, which, according to rights groups has killed more than 2400 people. Britain has temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran, and Iran has shut its airspace to most flights.

TRUMP VENEZUELA – US President Donald Trump is due to host Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado at the White House today, in their first talks since the US operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

UGANDA ELECTIONSUganda votes today in presidential elections, with Yoweri Museveni seeking to extend his nearly 40-year rule. The 81-year-old is widely expected to secure a seventh term amid a crackdown on the opposition.

ASTRONAUTS RETURN – NASA and SpaceX are carrying out the early return of Crew-11 from the International Space Station following a medical issue involving one crew member. De-orbit & splashdown are expected off the coast of California at 09.41 our time, followed by a post-splashdown press conference later this morning.

Sport

FOOTBALL – Shock result in the Spanish Cup as Real Madrid crash out, losing 3-2 to second-division Albacete in their first match since manager Xabi Alonso’s departure.

In the German Bundesliga: Bayern Munich beat Cologne 3-1, Leipzig saw off Freiburg 2-0, Hoffenheim thrashed MoenchenGladbach 5-1, and Wolfsburg edged St. Pauli 2-1.

And in the Africa Cup of Nations: We have our final. Morocco beat Nigeria 4-2 on penalties, and they will now face Senegal, who defeated Egypt 1-0.

HANDBALL – The men’s European Handball Championship gets underway today. 24 teams will compete across Denmark, Sweden and Norway until the 1st of February, with hosts Denmark the strong favourites for the title.

The day will be cloudy throughout, especially during the morning. The sky might open up a bit, so it shouldn’t be all grey, all the time. We can however expect some drizzle at various points throughout the day. Temperatures will range from 3–5°C at the low end, going up to a maximum of 5–7°C in the afternoon.
