Fairies and witches, angels and demons, wizards and monsters. A good fantasy story takes you to another world where magic is not always light and gentle.
Diablero – Netflix
Based on a novel by Mexican writer Francisco Haghenbeck, the show tells the story of “Diablero” Elvis Infante who helps a young priest, Father Ramiro Ventura, to look for his daughter who has been kidnapped by a demon.
They are helped by Elvis’s sister Keta, a santera, and Nancy Gama, a young woman able to act as a vessel for demons. This ability, although helpful in their quest, does take its toll on Nancy.
Although “Diablero” shares DNA with shows like “Supernatural” or “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” it succeeds in creating a unique style thanks to the location and culture it lives in.
Taking place in Mexico City “Diablero” evolves in a world of underground demon fights, archaic south American rites and a catholic Church not only aware of demons but actively researching them for their own purpose.
With nice special effects, the show gives a different perspective of a city the viewer might be used to seeing as a hub of violence and drug crime from other shows. Here, it is shown as a place where people live and eat together in old, crumbling buildings as they fight supernatural beings.
“Diablero” is available on Netflix.
