POLICE BUSES - The Minister of Internal Security Henri Kox has confirmed that additional police patrols will start monitoring certain bus routes to reduce the number of attacks against drivers. Greater police presence is now hoped to act as a preventive measure and discourage potential assaults from happening.

IRAN SOLIDARITY - A group of MPs are showing solidarity with Iranian protesters. About 15 deputies have joined a committee for the defence of human rights in Iran and have symbolically sponsored an Iranian prisoner who has been sentenced to death. Among the 15 are majority and opposition representatives.

ACCIDENT - A mother and child have been taken to the hospital, following a serious car accident yesterday. The young woman lost control of her vehicle and crashed into an embankment on the CR112, between Tuntange and Brouch. The car then overturned and came to rest on its roof. The woman and her small child were pulled out of the car by the rescue services and then taken to hospital.

A new awards ceremony for the “Luxembourg Music Prize” took place at the Rockhal in Belval last night. There were six categories. The national music award went to conductor Pierre Cao. Best new talent was Benjamin Kruithof.

World

ZELENSKY US - Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky has received a rapturous welcome as he addressed a joint session of the US congress in Washington. The house speaker Nancy Pelosi introduced Mr Zelensky, who told the chamber that the war in Ukraine is a fight for the freedom of the world. He thanked the US for its financial and military support, but reminded his audience of the harsh reality facing the Ukrainians. He said millions will not have heating or running water over Christmas. President Biden has confirmed that the US will provide nearly 2 billion dollars of additional military aid to Ukraine. He also emphasized that America would back Ukraine for as long as it takes.

ISRAEL COALITION - Seven weeks after his election win, Israel’s veteran leader Benjamin Netanyahu has announced he has formed a new government. He is returning to power as the head of the most right-wing coalition in Israel’s history. In addition to his right-wing conservative Likud party, the government is backed by ultra-orthodox Jewish parties and an extreme-right bloc.

EU CORRUPTION - A Belgian court will decide today whether to keep a Greek MEP in jail. Eva Kaili was arrested on corruption and money laundering charges linked to Qatar. Kaili, who was booted from her post as parliamentary vice president after police raids earlier this month, has become the face of the corruption scandal rocking the European Parliament.

TOUR DE FRANCE - The organizing committee of the Tour de France has announced that the race in 2024 will start in Florence in Italy. The Tour will start with three stages in Italy and, because of the Paris Olympics, will end in Nice, the first time since 1905 that it will not reach its climax on the streets of the capital.

FOOTBALL PELE - Doctors treating the former Brazilian football star Pele say he will have to remain in hospital over Christmas, as his cancer has advanced. Pele was diagnosed with colon cancer three years ago.

NFL HARRIS - In in American football, the former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Franco Harris, the man whose stunning catch in an NFL play-off game is celebrated as the “Immaculate Reception,” has died at the age of 72. Harris’s death comes just days before the 50th anniversary of his famous grab against the Oakland Raiders in 1972.
