Unconventional animals using public transport isn’t something new to us Luxembourgers considering we had the pleasure of spotting a pet Rhea bird in the tram last summer, or the 2019 classic of goats on a bus.

Those were relatively small animals compared to the cow that was accompanied into a train by a few young men on Sunday night in Switzerland.

Videos and pictures on social media show how the men board the train with the cow and pet it repeatedly during the journey. With them, the men also had a bucket and a shovel to remove cow dung, and some straw.

The reason for the unusual traveler was apparently an agricultural fair that took place last week. The young cow was there and was now to be brought home by its owner - the young man opted for what was probably the most unusual method.

The animal seems to have remained calm for the entire journey. According to a spokesman for the Thurbo regional railroad in eastern Switzerland, the train conductor had noticed the unusual passenger but decided to continue his journey anyway, partly in order to keep to the timetable. Actually, however, the transport of such large animals in public transport is not allowed.

Thurbo took the action with humour and won’t be pressing charges. It is hoped that the cow enjoyed the ride, the spokesman said. Nevertheless, the action could have repercussions for the men: According to the St. Gallen city police, the veterinary office is investigating whether there was a violation of the Animal Welfare Act.
