FLOOD ALERT - Following several days of incessant rain, concerns over the rising water levels of the Moselle River have been raised. The flood warning service now remains on standby as the meteorological conditions indicate a potential risk of flooding. Meteolux has accordingly issued an ongoing yellow alert - stretching in to Wednesday, which covers the entirety of the southern region of the country. However, it is anticipated that water levels will recede over the course of today.

HIT-AND-RUN - The authorities in Luxembourg City are seeking assistance from witnesses following a hit-and-run incident involving a parked vehicle in the Ville-Haute neighbourhood. On Sunday evening, an unidentified vehicle collided with a parked car on Place du Théâtre in Luxembourg City. The driver of the vehicle allegedly departed the scene without addressing the damage caused. According to the police, a witness was present at the scene, which occurred between 6.40pm and 9.15pm. They are asking this person to come forward with any pertinent information regarding the accident. Any individuals with relevant details or information pertaining to the incident are encouraged to contact the Luxembourg City Police.

BURGLARY CAUTION - As Luxembourg embarks on a two-week Easter holiday period, authorities issued a reminder for heightened vigilance following reports of recent burglaries. In view of the holidays, authorities urge residents to take precautionary measures, especially if planning an extended absence:
- Inform a trusted individual of your departure to arrange regular house check-ins.
- Consider registering with the police’s “Going on Holiday” service, enabling inclusion in routine patrols to enhance property security.

World

TAIWAN - A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan Wednesday, as Taiwanese officials have confirmed at least one person has died while rescuers are pulling people from collapsed buildings. The quake initially set off tsunami warnings on the island and neighbouring countries, most of which have now been retracted. The strongest tremor to hit the island in 25 years was also felt as far as Taiwan’s mountainous interior, which was rocked by huge landslides.

GAZA AID TRAGEDY - World powers widely condemned an Israeli strike in the Gaza Strip that killed seven charity staff delivering desperately needed aid to the war-torn territory. World Central Kitchen -- one of two NGOs spearheading efforts to distribute aid brought by boat -- said a “targeted Israeli strike” on Monday had killed Australian, British, Palestinian, Polish and US-Canadian staff. US President Joe Biden said he was “outraged and heartbroken”. In a strongly worded statement, he said Israel’s investigation of the strike “must be swift, it must bring accountability, and its findings must be made public.”

ISTANBUL INFERNO - A fire that raged from the basement of a 16-storey building in central Istanbul killed at least 29 people on Tuesday, with flames and thick smoke billowing for hours despite a massive emergency response. The fire was eventually contained and rescue efforts had ended by early evening, and eight people were arrested over the blaze that began in a basement where builders had been renovating a nightclub. The local mayor’s office said in a statement that it had received “no request for authorisation” from the owners of the nightclub or the contractor “regarding any possible renovation of the premises”.

Sport

FOOTBALL - In last night’s football fixtures FC Kaiserslautern progressed in the German DFB Cup with a 2-0 victory over FC Saarbrucken, Juventus beat Lazio 2-0 in the Copa Italia, and Lyon recorded a 3-0 victory over Valenciennes in the French Cup. Meanwhile, in England, Tottenham’s chances of securing a top-four finish were dented with a disappointing 1-1 draw against London rivals West Ham.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL - A US women’s basketball record television audience of 12.3 million people watched sensation Caitlin Clark lead Iowa over rival Louisiana State University in the college playoffs, telecaster ESPN said Tuesday. The previous record was 11.83 million viewers for the 1983 final between Southern California and Louisiana Tech on CBS, a major network rather than a cable telecaster. Clark, the all-time leading scorer for men or women in the history of US college basketball, scored 41 points in Iowa’s 94-87 victory over the Tigers in a Monday rematch of last year’s March Madness championship game.
