SPECIAL NEEDS PROJECT - A new campus the size of two football pitches is being developed in Pétange, which will include facilities to accommodate children, adolescents, and people with special needs. Education Minister Claude Meisch explained there will be a nursery for babies who can no longer stay at home as well as a psychotherapeutic boarding school and a social boarding school for children and adolescents. 30 accommodations for autistic people and six accommodations for mentally disabled adults are also planned.

EU PARLIAMENT BIRTHDAY - The EU parliament is celebrating its 70th birthday today. France’s Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and Luxembourg’s own Xavier Bettel will attend the festivities in Strasbourg. The EU Parliament has a seat in the 3 countries. The Parliament’s secretariat is based here in Kirchberg.

INDONESIA QUAKE - Rescuers are searching for survivors buried under rubble after an earthquake on Indonesia’s main island of Java killed 162 people, injured hundreds and left more feared trapped in collapsed buildings. The area where the quake struck is densely populated and prone to landslides, with poorly built houses reduced to rubble in many areas. Authorities said around 13,000 people have been evacuated . Indonesian President Joko Widodo is expected to visit the area today.

UKRAINE WHO - The World Health Organisation has warned that millions of Ukrainian lives are at risk this winter. WHO’s regional director for Europe, Hans Kluge told reporters that half of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is either damaged or destroyed, and 10 million are currently without power. He added that this winter will be about survival. Temperatures are predicted to plummet as low as -20C in some areas.

ESA SPACE - European Ministers for Space will meet in Paris today and tomorrow. The subject is European access to space. This includes monitoring climate change, secure communications and quick responses to crises. In addition, 4 to 6 new astronauts will be presented and ministers are expected to pass the budget of the European space agency ESA for the next 3 years - 18.6 billion euros are planned. Luxembourg is represented by Economy Minister Franz Fayot.

WORLD CUP - England beat Iran 6-2, the Netherlands won 2-0 against Senegal and the USA drew with Wales 1-1 yesterday. Today, Argentina will play Saudi Arabia, Denmark will play Tunisia, Mexico plays Poland and France plays Australia.

TENNIS DAVIS CUP - For tennis, rather than football fans ...the Davis Cup finals open in their latest home in Malaga, Spain today, short of stars but promising the added emotion that competing for national team brings. Both Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal will not be on the home team.

Weather

The wind has blown away, but today will be filled with rain and clouds for the duration of the day. Morning temperatures will start off slightly warmer however, at 3-5 °C, rising somewhat to 5-7 °C in the afternoon.
