In the video, the woman can be seen dancing and making gestures at the animal, which many social media users and local media have interpreted as taunting. The woman was not injured in the incident.
“This action was a serious violation and unlawful trespass that could have resulted in serious injury or death. Barriers and rules are in place to keep both visitors, staff and animals safe,” a zoo spokesperson said.
“We have a zero tolerance policy on trespass and violation of barriers,” she added.
According to NYPD, the zoo filed a complaint for criminal trespass.
