
Eliane Jabbour was driving through the streets of Beirut with her son Robin when they were stopped by protesters. She told them that her son was scared, so in response, they started chanting ‘Baby Shark’.
The song, released by South Korean education company Pinkfong in 2015, has circulated widely online, amassing nearly 3.8 billion plays on YouTube. It is now the fifth most-watched video on the platform and has even broken into traditional music markets, reaching number 6 in the official UK charts in January 2019.
Demonstrations in Lebanon started on October 17 when the cash-strapped government proposed a bill to tax Whatsapp and other messaging apps. You can read more about the ongoing protests here.
