US SHOOTING - Police confirmed that three people were killed and five injured in a shooting at Michigan State University last night. The suspected gunman then shot himself dead.
TURKEY/SYRIA EARTHQUAKE - The UN says President Assad of Syria has agreed to open two more border crossings to allow in earthquake aid from Turkey. It is feared that more than a million people in Turkey and several more in Syria are homeless. 37,000 people are now known to have died in the earthquake.
NATO UKRAINE - Defence ministers from NATO member states are meeting in Brussels today to discuss how to supply Ukraine with the arms and training its military needs to fend off a renewed Russian offensive. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Ukraine’s military was consuming more ammunition than Western countries were providing.

TRAVEL REPORT - According to a new STATEC report, Luxembourgers resumed their old travel habits in the summer of last year and even surpassed pre-pandemic levels with a total of 916,000 leisure stays.This figure corresponds to 1.7 holidays per resident and an increase of 38% compared to the summer of 2019.
LUXEMBOURG CONSUMPTION - Also, if all of humanity consumed as much as Luxembourg, the planet’s resources would be completely exhausted by today, the 14th February, according to the Global Footprint Network. Only Qatar performs worse than Luxembourg: its overshoot day falls on 10 February. Although the overshoot day is convenient for comparing countries, its method of calculation is debated.
WOMEN SCIENTISTS - According to new Eurostat data, in 2021 the EU had almost 7 million female scientists, topping 40% of the total share. The data also shows that science in some countries, including Luxembourg, is still overwhelmingly male-dominated. In 2021, the Grand Duchy had one of the lowest shares in the EU, with only 35% of scientists and engineers in Luxembourg identifying as female.
ROYAL ANNIVERSARY - It’s a doubly special day for the most prominent couple in Luxembourg. Grand Duke Henri and his wife Maria Teresa celebrate their 42nd wedding anniversary today. They were married on this day in 1981 in the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Luxembourg.
LUXEMBOURGISH LOVE - It turns out there is no direct verb for loving in Luxembourgish. According to the Centre for the Luxembourgish Language the only way to express your love for someone is by using ‘Ech hunn dech gär’ or ‘Ech si frou mat dir’. The first roughly translates to ‘I like you a lot,’ while the second means ‘I am happy with you’. CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - In football, we have 2 Champion League games tonight. PSG will play Bayern and Milan will play Tottenham, both at 2100 in the round of 16. Paris Saint-Germain are hoping Kylian Mbappe can make a rapid recovery from injury and feature in tonight’s showdown with Bayern Munich. Mbappe has returned to the training pitch Sunday and again on Monday.
UEFA REPORT - A report commissioned by the UEFA has found that the body itself bears “primary responsibility” for failures which “almost led to disaster” at the 2022 Champions League final in Paris between Liverpool and Real Madrid. The report also claimed the policing model was influenced by a view, based on the deadly 1989 Hillsborough disaster, on incorrect assumptions that the city’s supporters were a threat to public order.
