Show on the big screens at Nationals Park stadium Trump was loudly booed by baseball fans who apparently don’t have the same political affinity as POTUS.
He is not the first leader of the USA to receive such treatment as the same fate befell Carter, Nixon, Reagan and the Bushes.
Trump did not stay until the end of the game - though it has not been suggesting he left due to the booing.
Breaking with tradition
Every US president since 1910 has thrown out a ceremonial first-pitch at a baseball game during their time in office. Major League Baseball’s commissioner, Rob Manfred, has gone on record stating that the President had told him he did not want to participate in the ceremony at this year’s World Series “in order to make the fan experience as positive as possible”.
Instead Washington DC chef José Andrés, a vocal critic of Trump, took to the mound to do the honours.
Cries of “Lock him up!” were clearly heard throughout, a reference to the chants about Hillary Clinton used at Trump’s rallies in the run-up to the 2016 presidential elections.
