
The law says that the UK have to hold the European Parliament election if Brexit is delayed beyond the poll in May. This is clearly stated in the EU treaty, according to a European Parliament spokesperson in Brussels.
Should the UK ignore this obligation, it may face legal challenges from its citizens who would be denied their right to vote.
There has been an increasing amount of speculation around a potential delay of the Brexit date of 29th March by the Parliament. However, should this be the case, all 27 member countries would have to agree.
