If they do not exchange their licences, they may have to pass a driving test in their country of residence after the UK leaves the EU.

The advise, which was published this week, states that those affected should “consider exchanging your UK driving licence for an EU driving licence as soon as possible,” as increased demand may lead to delays and longer processing times nearer Brexit.

The government also stated that returning to the UK with an EU licence will not cause problems so long as you passed your driving test in the UK, in which case you will be able to exchange it without taking another test.

In case of a no-deal Brexit, the UK government also warned that UK citizens traveling abroad to the EU after Brexit may need an international driving permit. More information through the link below.

Exchanging your licence in Luxembourg

You can find detailed information on how to exchange your licence for a Luxembourgish one through Guichet. In essence, all that is required is that you:

  • Fill out a form
  • Pay a stamp duty of €30
  • Send the filled-out form, evidence of payment, a photocopy of both sides of your current licence, an extract of your criminal record in Luxembourg, and a photocopy of an identity document to the SNCA.

You will then be notified once your licence is ready for collection, at which point you will also have to hand in your old licence.
