The accident took place around 5.30am on the A31 near Custine (Meurthe-et-Moselle) in the direction of Nancy. For unknown reasons, a car drove across the roadside barrier and ended up on lower terrain beside the motorway.

Four people were in the vehicle. Two people died, and two others were seriously injured, according to newspaper France Bleu. A third person, apparently a witness, was injured in trying to help the victims, the newspaper continues.

According to Nancy’s public prosecutor’s office, “the cause of the accident was excessive speed. We do not know at this time whether the driver was driving drunk or under the influence of drugs.”

The accident mobilised no less than 35 rescuers and disrupted traffic for an extended period of time.
