According to new information from investigators, a Turkish national arrest warrant is in place against the suspect in the attack that left six people dead at a centre for young mothers in Stade, Lower Saxony. A spokeswoman for the Stade public prosecutor's office confirmed the information on Monday. Investigators had only now come across the warrant, since the Turkish authorities had not issued an international arrest warrant for the man.
According to the prosecutor's office, it is currently understood that the accused holds Turkish nationality only. The 45-year-old is alleged to have shot six staff members from the centre and the youth welfare office three weeks ago at the centre in Stade.
According to investigators, the background to the attack was probably a custody dispute. The facility housed the suspect's three-month-old daughter and the child's 34-year-old mother. The man was arrested shortly after the incident while attempting to flee. He is being held in custody on suspicion of six counts of murder.
