Luxembourg

PETROL PRICE - The price of petrol has jumped for the second time in a week. Unleaded 95 will increase by 4.3 cents to €1.60 per litre. Unleaded 98 now costs €1.81. Diesel remains the same at €1.50 per litre.

HUSKY LAYOFFS - Husky Technologies joins the list of industry business planning layoffs in Luxembourg. 155 jobs out of a total of 1,000 are at stake, as the manufacturer plans to withdraw one of its services in Luxembourg. Labour minister Georges Engel, as well as Minister for the Economy Franz Fayot have expressed concerns over the impending layoffs at Husky, which follow redundancies announced earlier this month at Dupont Teijin.

PRINCE FRANCOIS - The Hereditary Grand Duke and Duchess have taken their new baby son home on Thursday after being discharged from the maternity ward. The new prince had his first family photoshoot at the maternity hospital earlier this week, the same as his older brother, Prince Charles.

World

TRUMP INDICTMENT - Criminal charges have been brought against Donald Trump in New York, making him the first president in history to be indicted. The enquiry was looking at alleged payments made to a porn star during the 2016 election campaign. Trump says he has been the victim of a witchhunt. It is expected that he will make his first appearance in a courtroom on Tuesday.

FINLAND NATO - Finland’s membership of NATO has been ratified by all of the military alliance’s member states. The last step came late on Thursday in Ankara, where the Turkish parliament approved a bill allowing Finland to join.

BELGIUM NUCLEAR - The Belgian nuclear powers plants of Doel and Tihange are expected to extend operations for ten more years until 2037, however not before a public consultation with neighbouring countries. Residents of Belgium as well as other EU countries (including Luxembourg) have been invited to assess whether the power plants play an essential role in securing electricity supplies. Based on the opinions and comments received, Belgium’s parliament will then discuss the tabled bill.

PALTROW TRIAL - The Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow has won a US lawsuit, after being sued over a skiing accident in Utah seven years ago. The jury ruled that it was in fact the claimant, a retired optometrist Terry Sanderson who was at fault. He has been ordered to pay her a symbolic $1 in damages.

PISTORIUS PAROLE - A South African parole board is meeting today to decide whether Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius should be released from prison early, a decade after he killed his girlfriend. Known worldwide as the “Blade Runner” because of his carbon-fibre prosthetics, Pistorius was found guilty of murder and given a 13-year jail sentence in 2017 after a lengthy trial, including several appeals.

TENNIS - Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina has reached the final of the Miami Open by beating American world number three Jessica Pegula 7-6 , 6-4. Kazakstan’s Rybakina is on course to claim the ‘Sunshine Double’ after winning in Indian Wells earlier this month. The 23-year-old, ranked seventh in the world, will face the winner of today’s semi-final between Petra Kvitova and Romanian Sorana Cirstea.

FOOTBALL - Arsenal enter the final furlong of the Premier League title race with a clash against Leeds on Saturday as they bid to be crowned champions for the first time in 19 years. Second-placed Manchester City face Liverpool. It’s the 26th matchday in the German Bundesliga today. Frankfurt meets Bochum this evening and in France, Marseille will face Montpellier...

We’re expecting gusts of up to 75km/h in some parts of the country, with winds of at least 20-30km/h throughout the day. It will feel breezy with showers most of the day. Morning temperatures will start off at 8 to 10°C, rising to 10-12°C in the afternoon.
