
TRUMP INDICTMENT - The former US President Donald Trump has arrived in Miami, where he is due to appear in court to face federal criminal charges. He is accused of hoarding secret documents after he left office and obstructing officials who tried to recover them. Police in Miami are preparing for possible protests.
IAEA UKRAINE - The International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi is travelling to Ukraine to meet President Zelensky today. He says he also wants to assess the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant following last week’s attacks on the Kakhovka dam. The damage on the dam has led to flooding and evacuations and raised questions about cooling water supplies to the plant, which is about 140 kilometres upstream of the dam.
UK COVID INQUIRY - An inquiry probing the UK government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic kicks off today and is expected to last 3 years. The UK suffered one of the worst Covid-19 death tolls in Europe with more than 128,500 fatalities recorded by mid-July 2021.The first phase of the inquiry will focus on the UK’s resilience and preparedness in the face of the global health emergency.
BERLUSCONI DIES - And fans of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi have gathered outside the hospital where he died yesterday. Journalists, curious onlookers and fans stood in the hot sun outside the hospital, which was visited by Berlusconi’s brother and three daughters early in the day. A state funeral will be held in Milan’s Duomo cathedral on Wednesday.
ELECTIONS COALITIONS - after the municipal elections on Sunday, some new coalitions have been announced. Among them is the commune of Hesperange, where the Conservative Social People’s Party has agreed to work with the Democratic Party, the DP. In Kehlen, the CSV and Socialist Workers party, the LSAP have agreed on a coalition. In Niederanven, the CSV and Greens are in agreement and in Ettelbrueck, the mayor is changing after 20 years. ECONOMIC REPORT - In its economic report issued yesterday, STATEC presented its analysis of the current economic landscape in Luxembourg. Prices continue to rise but a return to a more normal rate of price growth is anticipated, just not yet. STATEC also anticipates a rise in wages in the coming months driven by this year’s indexation, and expects the labor shortage to persist.
BASKETBALL - The Denver Nuggets are the champions in the American basketball league, the NBA, winning the best-of-seven finals 4-1. The team captured their first championship title in Denver’s club history, defeating the Miami Heat 94-89 behind 28 points and 16 rebounds from Nikola Jokic.
FOOTBALL - French star Kylian Mbappe has told Paris Saint-Germain he will not be taking up an option to extend his contract by one year beyond 2024. That opens the door to the 24-year-old’s possible exit during this summer’s transfer window. Mbappe’s confirmation by letter comes a little over a year since he snubbed Real Madrid by signing a surprise extension to his contract to remain at the French champions.
Meanwhile, Manchester was bathed in blue last night as even a thunder storm and torrential rain could not stop thousands of Manchester City fans celebrating a treble with their heroes. City became just the second side to win the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in the same season after beating Inter Milan 1-0 in Istanbul on Saturday to become European champions for the first time.
