The Boston Coastguard confirmed to the BBC that efforts to locate the missing vehicle were currently in progress as of Monday.
The number of people on board during the submersible’s disappearance, if any, remains unknown.

Submersibles of small size are sometimes used to guide paying tourists and specialists to the Titanic wreckage. These multi-day ventures often come with a price tag in the tens of thousands of dollars. A complete dive to the Titanic, accounting for both the descent and ascent, is reported to take approximately eight hours.

The Titanic, a legendary shipwreck, rests 3,800m (12,500ft) deep in the Atlantic Ocean and approximately 600km (370 miles) from Newfoundland, Canada.

On its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in 1912, the passenger liner — the largest of its time — collided with an iceberg. Out of the 2,200 passengers and crew members on board, over 1,500 tragically lost their lives.

Since the discovery of the Titanic’s wreck in 1985, it has been a site of extensive exploration.
