The phallic creatures are not real fish but fat inkeeper worms, or Urechis caupo. They usually bury themselves in sand and mud. They are called “fat inkeeper worms” because their tunnels often contain other animals.

A recent storm in California has uprooted the animals and Drake’s Beach was consequently covered in the pulsating creatures.

The animal is an integral part of Chinese cuisine.
