
HOME OFFICE - EU member states have collaborated on a new agreement for cross-border workers, allowing home office hours to double. Cross-border workers will now remain insured in their country of employment if they carry out fewer than 50%, rather than 25% previously, of their working hours in their country of residence. Luxembourg’s Minister for Social Security, Claude Haagen, signed the new agreement yesterday, saying that geographical borders will no longer an obstacle to cross-border teleworking.
FOREIGN STUDENTS - A new intiative to enhance the integration process for foreign students and their families will be introduced from this summer. Every year, approximately 4,000 students from abroad join Luxembourg’s school system, either due to their parents relocating for work or being forced to flee their home countries. The key component of this initiative is the establishment of the Service for Integration and Admission in School (SIA), which will provide assistance and guidance to families in navigating the Luxembourg school system. The integration service will also promote interculturality within schools. The corresponding legislation, presented by Minister of Education Claude Meisch on Tuesday, is set to be voted on in the Chamber of Deputies before the summer recess.
QUADRIPARTITE MEETING - Today a quadripartite meeting is taking place between government, trade unions, employers and healthcare providers. Representatives from the 4 sectors are meeting in Mondorf-les-Bains to discuss the deficit of 55 million euros in the health fund.
GASPERICH PARK - With 16 hectares of green space, the largest park in the capital, the Gasperich park will be officially opened today. The park will have recreational lawns, a pond, playground areas, and four kilometres of branching paths. It will also be equipped with a multisports ground, a beach volleyball court, pétanque courts and a large children’s play area.
UKRAINE DAM - Thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes in southern Ukraine, because of flooding caused by the damage to a dam on the Dnipro river. The International Atomic Agency says the safety of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is not immediately threatened by the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam. The plant lies upstream of the dam and uses its reservoir for cooling. The United Nations and the EU have announced aid packages and the UN Security Council also held an emergency meeting due to the dam explosion. Russia and Ukraine blamed each other.
CHRISTIE PRESIDENTIAL RUN - The former governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie has become the latest US Republican to launch the attempt to become the party’s candidate for next year’s presidential election. Christie was an advisor to Donald Trump, before they fell out over the former President’s refusal to accept the result of the 2020 election.
GOLF - The PGA Tour and DP World Tour have agreed to merge with Saudi-Arabian backed circuit LIV Golf in a deal that ends the sport’s bitter two-year rift. In a bombshell agreement that caught the golf world by surprise, the two tours will combine their commercial businesses and rights into a new company. LIV Golf was launched in October 2021 and lured a number of big name players, including Phil Mickelson, former world number one Dustin Johnson and reigning PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka. In a statement PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said that after two years of disruption and distraction, it’s a historic day for the game.
TENNIS - Novak Djokovic has closed in on a potential blockbuster French Open semi-final against Carlos Alcaraz on Friday, after beating Karen Khachanov 4-6, 7-6 (7/0), 6-2, 6-4. This afternoon Alexander Zverev will play Tomas Etcheverry, and in the evening there will be a Scandinavian duel between the Norwegian Casper Ruud and the Dane Holger Rune.
FOOTBALL - It has been confirmed that Real Madrid’s Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema has signed for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad for three years starting next season.
